Chief Executive and Strategic Management Team

The Chief Executive and Strategic Management Team (SMT) lead and manage the organisation's work to end the isolation of sight loss.

Chief Executive, RNIB - Lesley-Anne Alexander CBE

Lesley-Anne is married, has one son and lives in Middlesex. She was appointed CEO at RNIB in January 2004.

Lesley-Anne has always worked in the public and voluntary sectors. Before joining RNIB, Lesley-Anne was Director of Operations for the Peabody Trust, one of the UK's largest housing associations and regeneration agencies. Before this she held various posts in local government with her final post being Director of Housing with the London Borough of Enfield.

Since joining RNIB, Lesley-Anne has been instrumental in trying to rationalise and modernise the sight loss sector, with innovations such as the Association with Action for Blind People and development of the UK Vision Strategy.

In June 2012 Lesley-Anne was awarded the Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in recognition of her services to the voluntary sector.

Voluntary activities

Lesley-Anne currently Chairs both the UK Vision Strategy Group and ACEVO (the Association of Chief Executives of Voluntary Organisations).

Keith Hickey, Group Director - Resources

Keith coordinates our resources to ensure we all have the support we need to deliver the strategy. These resources include Business Planning, Finance, Corporate Services, IT and Knowledge Systems, and HR. These support services are vital for us to do our every day job and make it significantly easier to achieve our objectives.

Keith's previous roles include Chief Executive of the Charity Finance Directors' Group and Finance Director of Help the Aged. Keith is a member of the Charity SORP Committee, ICAEW charities technical committee, Livability Board of Trustees and the Media Trust audit committee.

Stephen King, Group Director - Prevention and International Affairs

Stephen leads one of RNIB's three strategic priorities: stopping people losing their sight unnecessarily. Stephen also leads our work with global business, government and non-governmental organisations (NGO's). Since joining RNIB in 1990, Stephen has been instrumental in helping RNIB to establish our reputation as a world leader. Stephen has led on developing our customer service, National Library Service, products and publications and our work to improve access to TV, ICT and books, magazines and newspapers.

Stephen has an MBA from the Scottish Business School at Glasgow University and is a Fellow of the Chartered Management Institute. Outside RNIB, Stephen is a Non-Executive Director at NHS West Essex, a Trustee of Sightsavers International, a member of the Ocular Public Health Committee of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and a board member of the Daisy Consortium.

Wanda Hamilton, Group Director - Fundraising

Wanda is responsible for leading the Fundraising Group. Our fundraising teams are responsible for raising almost half of the income we need to run our services for blind and partially sighted people. All our fundraising activities seek to acquire, retain and develop supporters of all types, to enhance their relationship with RNIB, and to maximise their value to the organisation.

Wanda Hamilton joined RNIB as Group Director of Fundraising in June 2010. She previously worked as Chief Executive of AMD Alliance International, based in Canada, promoting awareness, treatment and research into macular degeneration. Prior to this Wanda worked at the Canadian National Institute for the Blind and on the political staff of two Canadian Cabinet Ministers.

Fazilet Hadi, Group Director - Inclusive Society

Fazilet leads one of RNIB's three strategic priorities: creating an inclusive society. This includes improving mainstream services such as transport, shopping and banking and making new technologies accessible. It also ensures that blind and partially sighted people have the information and support they need to get out and about, shop and bank and to use new technologies to communicate, read and watch TV.

Fazilet is responsible for a number of teams and services, including campaigns, marketing, membership and information services (including our Helpline), the National Library Service, products and publications, publishing and internal communications

Sally Harvey, Group Director - Media Project

Sally is RNIB's substantive Group Director - Independent Living, leading one of RNIB's three strategic priorities: supporting independent living. However, commencing May 2012, Sally is undertaking a secondment to head up an exciting project to review how RNIB develops and extends the availability of accessible media. During her secondment Sally will continue to be part of the Strategic Management Team and will manage RNIB's Commercial and Operations Team as well as the RNIB Pears Centre for Specialist Learning.


Charlie Mack, Interim Group Director - Independent Living

Charlie Mack leads one of RNIB's three strategic priorities: supporting independent living. This includes reaching people at an early stage to support them in getting on with their lives after losing their sight, helping people live independent lives through support, education and employment and ensuring our care and education services provide support to those people with complex needs, as well as increasing diagnosis of sight loss in people with learning disabilities.

Charlie is also responsible for our services in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, our education and care homes, community living service and RNIB schools and college.

Charlie has worked in the statutory sector in England and in the international private sector until taking up a career in the voluntary sector in Northern Ireland. He was a senior manager in the Northern Ireland Council for Integrated Education and then the National Trust.He completed his MBA at this time and won a prestigious scholarship for voluntary sector management in the US at Boston College. He holds the certificate of the Institute of Directors and is a non Executive Director board member of the Fire and Rescue Service and the Social Care Council.

Stephen Remington, Chief Executive - Action for Blind People

In April 2009, Action for Blind People became part of the RNIB Group. Action for Blind People delivers services for blind and partially sighted people in the English Regions on behalf of the Group.

As a result their Chief Executive, Stephen Remington, became part of RNIB's Strategic Management Team. Stephen is responsible for ensuring Action focuses on the needs and aspirations of blind and partially sighted customers. Central to this is the recent review and redesign of their services.

In 2000, Stephen received the Charity Times' "Charity Chief Executive of the Year" award. Previously, Stephen worked in the arts for over 20 years, 14 of which were as Chief Executive of Sadler's Wells in London.

Board of Trustees

RNIB's Board of Trustees is RNIB's supreme decision making authority.

The Board is responsible for taking the major decisions which affect the organisation, including appointing RNIB's Chief Executive.
