Digital Eyes

Help spread the word about our new initiative

Technology isn't just about gadgets - it's about making life easier, and can be especially helpful if you have sight loss.

Here at RNIB we work hard to help blind and partially sighted people of all ages get access to technology - offering courses, products assistance and support.

A new initiative

We are currently exploring ideas for funding to run an exciting new Initiative called Digital Eyes. This will include working with Action for Blind People and our Technology Support Squad volunteers to encourage older blind and partially sighted people to get online, introduce them to affordable and accessible tablets, smartphones and e-readers and show them how to use them effectively. This will make it easier for them to keep in touch with friends and family, find out about local services, shop online and continue to enjoy their hobbies.

Helen Johnston, RNIB Technology Support Service Manager, said: "Many older blind and partially sighted people are missing out on the benefits new technology can bring, as they often feel that it's too complicated or inaccessible. Through training sessions and equipment loans, Digital Eyes will give them the confidence to 'have a go' and realise that a whole new world is only a click away."

Technology transforms lives

Technology has already transformed the lives of many older people with sight loss, who can now enjoy the huge benefits it can bring to everyday life. Mrs Galeba uses it to socialise and gain access to advice, interests and information that she would have difficulty finding because of her sight loss. This in turn helps to reduce the isolation many people experience.

"I'm well in my 80s, and can no longer see to read and write so I find technology very helpful in my life. It helps me enormously - I can send emails and keep up to date with friends and family. I use it for playing games, Google and keeping up with the news. I find it very important in my general social life too."

Our Technology Support Squad is a free service comprising of 1,000 volunteers across the UK who help blind and partially sighted people set up and use technology. They can give advice over the phone or visit people at home.
