Employment

Two thirds of working age blind and partially sighted people are not in work. In addition, the government's own research has shown that 90 per cent of employers believe that it would be impossible or difficult to employ someone with sight loss, presenting huge barriers to finding work. This is a situation that has to change.

Campaigning at all stages

With the barriers to employment for blind and partially sighted people ranging from a lack of quality support to employer misconceptions, we want to see improvements at every stage of the job seeker and employee's journey.

Some of our main areas of campaigning are:

  • Improving the support blind and partially sighted people receive in the workplace through schemes such as Access to Work.
  • Remove the barriers many find in work as they lose their sight by promoting vocational rehabilitation.
  • Creating jobs by rewarding innovative thinking or encouraging the creation of social firms in our Hire Vision campaign
  • Ensuring welfare to work legislation from the Government actually works for blind and partially sighted people, such as Employment Support Allowance.
