2010 Party Conferences

In 2010 we're back at the Liberal Democrat, Labour and Conservative party conferences.

The conferences are taking place in Liverpool, Manchester and Birmingham and we'll be taking our award winning "Driving Down Sight Loss" stand to each venue to try to attract ministers, MPs, councillors and party representatives to listen to our vital message.

Our stand wins first prize for effectiveness

Our interactive stand this year challenges decision makers to take a drive round the streets of London. As they drive round the course we introduce them to the effects of age related macular degeneration (AMD) showing them the importance of regular sight tests as well as giving us opportunity to press our "driving down sight loss" messages.

Labour delegates were so impressed with the strength of the message that our stand was awarded a prize for it's effective delivery of our campaign. This is fantastic recognition for the importance of our campaigning work.

Driving down sight loss

  • 50 per cent of sight loss is avoidable with early detection and treatment or long term management.
  • For conditions like macular degeneration early detection and prompt treatment is vital, as sight is already being lost before a reduction in vision is noticed.
  • Regular sight tests (normally every two years for adults of working age) pick up early signs of eye disease and can save sight.

How can a driving test improve sight?

We have an opportunity with the EU Driving Licence Directive to improve the sight test for qualification to drive from the current 20 metre test to a full sight test. The current test was introduced in the 1930s when there were far fewer cars on the roads and speeds were much lower.

We are calling on MPs to support our call for the sight test for Driving Licence qualification to be improved from the 20 metre test to a full sight test.

Further messages

Access to sight saving treatments

There is strong and growing evidence of capacity issues in eye hospitals leading to delays in treatment of AMD, Glaucoma, Diabetic Retinopathy and Cataracts. These need to be addressed as a matter of urgency.

Independence

Giving up driving is a huge loss for people losing their sight, impacting on independence and quality of life. Not surprisingly being unable to drive is one of the aspects of sight loss that people fear most.

For anyone diagnosed with sight loss, emotional support and practical training in independent mobility is vital to ensure they can come to terms with the impact on their life and regain independence.
