What is "the Bedroom tax"?
From April, people living in council housing who are judged to be under-occupying, meaning they have one or more spare bedrooms, will have the amount of housing benefit they receive reduced. This is often being referred to in the media as 'the bedroom tax' and means people face having to make up a shortfall in rent or moving to a different house or flat.
As part of the Disability Benefits Consortium (DBC), RNIB has been calling for disabled people to be exempt from this cut, but unfortunately the Government has so far not acted on our concerns. We are taking part in a final push to try and get the Government to rethink and you can take part in this online action.
Take action for blind and partially sighted people
This action has been designed for people with all types of disability, so please personalise the message as much as possible.
The key additional point relevant specifically to blind people is the difficulties faced in learning new routes if forced to move out of their home and even out of the local area. There could even be the farcical situation where a local authority may have just spent money providing rehabilitation services to a newly blind person to live in their home and the local area, then to find that they are forced to move and much of the rehabilitation is wasted.
