Protective eyewear

UV eyeshields are suitable for everyone who requires protection from bright light, not just people with sight problems! They are designed to reduce the amount of ultra violet light that enters the eyes which reduces glare and increases contrast whilst protecting your eyes.

We have various styles of men's, ladies, unisex and children's frames in different colours, so you can find the best frame/filter combination to suit you. If you would like help in choosing a pair of eyeshields you can read our guide or watch our short video on YouTube.

Canes and tips

All of our canes, with the exception of symbol canes, should initially be purchased with the advice of a professional, such as a Mobility Officer or Physiotherapist.

Symbol canes are used to indicate to others that you have a visual impairment. They are not designed to be used as mobility or support aid. Our range of symbol canes include telescopic and folding versions in a range of different lengths.

Guide canes can be used in a diagonal position across the lower part of the body for protection, or to scan for kerbs and steps and should always point to the floor. The cane should reach just above waist level when standing upright, with the tip of the cane touching the ground between your legs. Guide canes are not to be used for supporting a person's body-weight.

Long canes should only be used by people who have attended a specialist training course to attain a high level of safe and independent travel. A long cane should reach between the sternum (breastbone) and under the chin, when standing upright and the cane tip is touching the ground between your legs. The length and speed of the user's walking stride will also affect the length of cane required. Long canes are not to be used for supporting a person's body weight. Our long canes are available in ten different lengths, folding or rigid, with a straight or crook handle and fitted with various tips.

Children's canes are available in different lengths ranging from 60cm to 85cm, and can be made in a range of colours including pink, blue and yellow.

We offer three fitting styles of replacement cane tips: hook style, push-on style and thread style. For help in selecting the correct replacement tip for your cane, read our guide.

We strongly recommend that if you need a replacement cane tip or elastic then you should approach your Local Society or Social Services team for assistance. You can contact our Helpline on 0303 123 9999 for help in finding your local service. It is recommended that only the manufacturer's replacement parts are used.

All of the AmbuTech canes on our online shop can be obtained in a variety of additional colours, with your preferred tip or handle type and in a length to suit you. If you can't find what you are looking for, contact our Helpline on 0303 123 9999 with your requirements and quote 'special order'. Our special order canes have an extended delivery time of four to six weeks.

Walking sticks

Walking sticks are intended as a means of support for people with sight loss and not as an aid to mobility. Please seek assistance from an Occupational Therapist or Physiotherapist to ensure the stick is the correct length and can give the support required.

We offer a range of different length walking sticks in wood or aluminium. Handle options include plastic and foam, in a variety of shapes including the ergonomically designed "Fischer" handle.

Additional lengths of walking sticks can also be supplied by special order. Call our Helpline on 0303 123 9999 with your requirements and quote 'special order'. Our special order walking sticks have an extended delivery time for four to six weeks.

Walking stick ferrules are excellent for increased stability and safety on uneven surfaces. It is important to replace worn ferrules. If you need help with choosing the correct ferrule for your walking stick, read our guide.

Electronic mobility aids

Electronic mobility aids are designed to be used in conjunction with a mobility cane or Guide dog.

The iGlasses are an ultrasonic obstacle detection device which are designed to be worn like a normal pair of spectacles. They provide vibration feedback when you near an obstacle at head and chest height such as over grown branches and hanging baskets. Available with either tinted or clear lenses, they will detect obstacles up to ten feet away. For a demonstration, watch our short video on YouTube.

The Trekker Breeze and Kapten Plus are talking GPS devices or 'Sat Navs'. Record the routes to your favourite places and then simply follow the saved route on your next visit! You can then explore your local area and listen to street names and points of interest as you pass nearby.

Accessories and clothing

Our range of clothing and accessories include cane storage bags and holders, high visibility 'Sam Brown' belts to increase your visibility at night and during poor weather, and universal snow and ice grips which slip over the toe of your shoes and help you stay on your feet in bad winter weather.
