Mobility training and aids

Mobility training

If you are losing your sight, you may find it difficult to do certain things. Getting the right equipment and training can make a big difference.

If you are having difficulty in finding training to help you live independently, contact our Helpline on 0303 123 9999 or email helpline@rnib.org.uk. Through our help, people with sight loss have received mobility training from their local social services department.

RNIB and IOE have collaborated on Mobility 21, a project to establish standards and training for habilitation (mobility and independence) workers with children and young people.

Quality standards in the delivery of habilitation training (mobility and independent living skills) for children and young people with visual impairment are designed to make sure children and young people with visual impairment are enabled, through high quality mobility and independence training and support, to achieve the greatest possible independence and maximise their educational outcomes and life chances.

To download your copy of these standards visit our Guidelines and quality standards in education page.

Transport and environments

RNIB Access Consultancy Services works to improve the urban, built and transport environments for all disabled people. For further information, refer to our page on Accessible environments.

Sight problems do not always mean an end to driving a car - driving and sight loss outlines the vision criteria people need to meet legal requirements.

Disabled and older people in England are entitled to free off-peak bus travel.

In co-operation with London Transport, we set up two types of electronic way-finding systems in two different transport interchanges, Pathfinder and RNIB React.

Campaigns and support

We believe that the right to travel in safety and without fear of accidents or hazards is important for everybody. Our Traveller's tales campaign for safer journeys raised awareness and advocated changes.

Talk and Support offers a range of telephone groups for people with sight problems, which can be accessed from the comfort of their home.

Products and publications

With more than 17,000 customers, RNIB's online shop is the UK's leading supplier of products for people with sight problems. Find out more about our range of mobility products.

The free Mobility and Independence book provides an opportunity to keep a continuous record throughout a child's life on their mobility and independence
