Leaving home

This section contains information that will be useful if you are considering living independently for the first time - either moving out of your family home into college or university accommodation, or into a new place where you will be on your own or with friends.

  • Life skills: travel and mobility - information about developing your mobility for life beyond school, including using public transport.
  • Life skills: money management - information about banking, handling money, benefits and welfare rights and living on a budget.
  • Life skills: cooking - tips about cooking for yourself, including gadgets that can help you around the home.
  • Help with low vision - details of low vision aids and how to get them through low vision services.
  • Your sighted friends - leaving home, moving to college, university or a work place will mean meeting new people and making new friends.

You can also visit our Moving-in Guide which is written for people starting university, but it may help in other new-home situations.

Mind's Eye blog

A blog written by, and aimed at, blind and partially sighted young people. Topics include school, college, university, work, free time, gadgets and ICT, plus getting help during tough times.
