Meet Uni Student

I am a 20 year old university student, studying Creative Writing in the midlands. However my home is a farm up north with sheep, cows, angora rabbits, two dogs, two sisters, one guinea pig, and one brother!

As well as reading and writing, I am passionate about music; I listen to everything from Green Day and Panic At The Disco, through to Kate Bush and Clannad. My favourite album is Jeff Wayne's The War Of The Worlds. I like musicals too and love a theatre trip. I listen to Radio 4 and 4 Extra a lot because I'm a big fan of classic comedy and sci-fi dramas. In the past I have played piano and percussion in a band. My friends are the most important thing in my life and as we live in different parts of the country, I'm always traveling to see them.

I have attended both mainstream and a school for the blind; I much preferred the blind school as it was easier for me to make friends there, and I felt that people understood me! Last year I did a gap year teaching English as a foreign language in Germany. That was really fun, I'd do it again any day.

Now I'm in my first year at university, and it hasn't been easy. Next year I'm moving in to a house with some friends and I'm waiting for a guide dog, so it's very exciting.

I have been totally blind since birth, but I am a very independent person. I believe that as visually impaired people, we have to face many challenges, and sometimes I feel frustrated at how much we have to fight. However once we've achieved something, it's important to look back and realise how far we've come. My motto is 'no sight, no limits.'
