September 2009
The foundations of the future were recently laid down at RNIB Rushton School and Children's Home (now known as RNIB Pears Centre). The first brick laying ceremony marked a vital stage in the transformation of the current site, into a state-of-the-art facility for young people with complex needs and sight loss.
The exciting milestone was celebrated by young people and staff alongside Mayor of Nuneaton and Bedworth, Councillor Tom Wilson and local business leaders.
Launch of Doug Squires' fundraising campaign
At the event Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce President Doug Squires announced his ambitious plan to cycle across America in aid of the facility.
The cycling enthusiast plans to undertake this gruelling adventure in 2010 to help raise vital funds for the development. In support of his plans, young people from RNIB Pears Centre presented him with a hand-decorated, customised sports t-shirt for him to wear.
Doug Squires commented, "Having witnessed the impact RNIB Pears Centre (formerly RNIB Rushton School and Children's Home) has on the young people and their families, I could not think of a more worthwhile project to lend my support to. I am thrilled to be there to witness such an important event."
