Large print books in your high street

At My Mother's Knee large print book

Find out more about how best selling authors are getting on board with RNIB to enable people to be able to order and buy large print books from local high street bookshops.

During April 2009, a nationwide campaign called "Focus on Books" was launched. This campaign, backed by bestselling authors and top publishers, aims to get Large Print books available on the high street.

What's in the current range

An additional 29 titles were launched in Autumn 2009 so there are now over 80 books to choose from including fascinating autobiographies, contemporary fiction and chilling crime novels. Chosen to appeal to a wide audience, the range includes lead titles from best selling authors and all books are available through bookshops nationwide.

Do the books look any different?

The books have the same cover and content as the standard book; it is only the font that is larger - 16-point rather than the standard 10-point.

Testing the market

There are several reasons for RNIB becoming involved in this work and we would like your help. We would like to establish how big the market for large print could actually be, to demonstrate to publishers that they have a responsibility to customers who can't read standard print and to encourage other high street booksellers to stock large print books.

So how can you help?

We would love your support in two ways:

1. Why not pop into your local high street bookshop or any Borders, Waterstone's or Books Etc stores and ask about any large print books they sell - or even buy one for yourself or someone you know.

2. Just talk to people about this initiative and help to spread the word.

Information on all the books available is listed on the Focus on Books website. FOCUS was initiated and funded by RNIB and the Publishers Licensing Society (PLS). The books are published by RNIB in association with BBC Audiobooks, Penguin, Random House, HarperCollins, Pan Macmillan, Little, Brown Book Group, and Hodder & Stoughton.

Please note, the books are also available to buy direct from RNIB's Book Site in large print and braille.
