If you're thinking about making a journey, either alone or with the support of friends, family or volunteers, this section will give you more information about what can help to make your journeys easier.

Planning your journey in advance will help make your journey easier, whether by bus, rail or London Underground.

Finding your way can be made much simpler by using accessible maps and Global Positioning System (GPS) products.

Travel downloads, podcasts and apps can provide you with a wide range of information digitally, including guidebooks, documentaries and live travel data.

Mike's experience of travel

Mike is 66 and lives in West Dorset. He was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa, which means that he only has some peripheral vision. He used to travel regularly but this has become less frequent as his sight has deteriorated, although he still travels at least a few times each month to visit friends and family.

Mike says that the biggest barrier he faces when travelling are his own worries that he's on the right train or bus. But he manages his concerns by asking train staff, bus drivers or other passengers if he's on the right vehicle and where the last stop was. This way he feels confident that he's going in the right direction and hasn't missed his stop.

"The biggest problem I face when travelling is my own doubts about whether I've got on the right bus or train. Don't be shy to ask for help and advice on your journey."

Mike says that the other key to successful travel is to plan well in advance, so that you find the easiest route and get reasonably priced tickets. Mike's local council makes planning for journeys easier by supplying large print bus timetables, which make planning his journey even easier.

"I always plan very well in advance. I phone Traveline and I find out the best way to get there and how to get the best price."

Finally, Mike says that there are many products that are vital when travelling, the most important of which is his bus hailer. He finds his bus hail card an essential part of making a journey because his nearest bus stop is a request stop and he often can't tell what is a bus and what is lorry. The bus hail card means that the drivers know to stop for him.
