Audio Description (AD) is a free service that can transform the enjoyment of TV for people who have difficulty seeing what's happening on the screen.

Accessible TV devices

There are quite a few accessible television devices in the market that have been developed to offer greater access to blind and partially sighted people. For example:

Reviews of a number of such products are now available on our website in the product reviews section. These product reviews have been written by blind or partially sighted people.

TV listings

Accessible TV guides and especially those highlighting audio described TV programmes can be hard to find.

There are web based, large print, audio and Braille TV guides available. We offer advice on these accessible TV listings.

TV licence

The blind concession for a TV licence was introduced on 1 April 2000.

Blind people can obtain a 50 per cent discount on the licence fee upon proof of entitlement. We offer advice on the TV licence concession or other issues relating to licencing.

Digital TV switchover

The analogue signals that we have all received for TV will be switched off around the country this year.

Therefore every household will need to switch to digital TV to continue watching. We offer advice on the switchover and the TV Help Scheme to assist blind and partially sighted people.

Advice to industry

We are keen to offer advice to professionals working in the TV industry on making equipment and broadcasts accessible for blind and partially sighted people.
