Early years settings

RNIB's 'Supporting Early Years Education series' focuses on child development from birth to five years. The guides on this page look at choosing an early years setting, including features of a good setting, specialist advice and information on developing an early years curriculum.

What to look for in an early years setting

This guide gives advice on choosing an early years setting for a child with a visual impairment.

Focus on foundation: Including children who are blind or partially sighted in early years settings (Third edition)

Focus on foundation offers practical ideas for the successful inclusion of children with sight loss in early years settings including reception classes.

It describes how a child with a vision impairment can take a full part in play and learning alongside children who are fully sighted. It is written for all who work in early years settings such as nurseries, reception classes, children's centres, playgroups, and out of school clubs. It may also be of interest to childminders welcoming a child with sight problems into their home.

Developing an early years curriculum

In this guide, we showcase the work of Leeds VI Team, an award-winning support service for children and young people with vision impairment. Here they show one aspect of their work in developing a curriculum to work with very young blind and partially sighted children which is an example of effective practice in this area.
