Ensure regular sight tests for high-risk groups
The key to preventing vision loss in many cases is regular eye examinations with an optometrist, in order to detect changes early on. (References 2,4,6.)
How often do people need to be tested?
Adults should have an eye test every two years and children should have one annually.
The following patients are at risk of sight loss and should have their eyes examined by an optometrist every year:
-
People with diabetes
-
People with a close relative who has glaucoma
-
People over the age of 70
Encourage your patients to stop smoking
It goes without saying that smoking is bad for one's health. However, smoking has now been unequivocally linked to the development of age-related macular degeneration and cataracts. (Reference 3.) Helping susceptible patients to stop smoking is therefore an important step in preventing vision loss. (References 8, 6.)
