Digital publishing of online newspapers and newspaper apps can make these publications available and accessible to those with print impairments.
Website accessibility
Following basic guidelines as you work on your website content builds accessibility into them and allows those with print impairments to read them.
Our guidance includes fundamentals such as page titles, text size, links, using alt text for images as well as signposting to other useful resources and advice.
Also ensure that any accessibility features that have been built into your newspaper website are included in any check lists when future updates are made.
RNIB Web Access Centre offers information and advice on making your website accessible to everyone.
Accessible apps
Newspaper apps have great potential for accessibility, particularly for people who do not use computers, but do use other digital devices.
Our guidance for creating accessible apps applies to newspaper apps and offers advice on making then accessible.
You can also read our comparisons of eBook readers which gives an overview of the accessibility benefits and obstacles of a selection of eBook readers.
Specialist provision
Many people will be able to read your newspapers directly when you make your newspaper websites and apps accessible.
However some print impaired people may read extracts from your newspaper in one of the formats provided by charities such as National Talking Newspapers and Magazines, part of RNIB Group. These services are provided thanks to the kind cooperation of the Newspaper Licensing Association.
