If you want to speak to someone about money there are plenty of places to get in touch with.

Rights and benefits advice

RNIB's Helpline provides advice and information on social security and other benefits, social services and sources of financial help - call 0303 123 9999 or email helpline@rnib.org.uk Online benefits advice is also available on the welfare rights section of our website.

The Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) publishes a range of free guides to benefits. These are available in several languages and in large print, braille and on tape from your local social security office and main post offices. The DWP also runs a freephone Benefits Enquiry Line for people with disabilities. Call between 8.30am and 6.30pm on weekdays (9am-1pm on Saturdays): 0800 88 22 00 (textphone 0800 24 33 55). For Northern Ireland, call 0800 22 06 74.

Help the Aged's Seniorline offers advice on disability benefits for older people on 0808 800 6565.

General advice and debt management

For general advice on money you can contact your local Citizens' Advice Bureau - call NACAB on 020 7833 2181 to find the one closest to you.

To find an independent money advice centre near you, contact the Money Advice Association on 01476 594 970.

If you have a debt problem, the Consumer Credit Counselling Service can provide a free debt management plan. Call free on 0800 138 1111.

Independent financial advice

If you need professional advice about managing your money - for example on investments, mortgages, life insurance - look for an independent financial adviser who will not be tied to a particular company and who is authorised through the Personal Investment Agency.

IFA Promotions will give you details of three local, registered independent financial advisers. Call 0117 971 1177.

If you have complaints or queries contact the Financial Services Authority Consumer Helpline on 0845 606 1234 (charged at local rate).

Money-saving advice

On another note, have you heard of Moneysavingexpert.com? It's an independent and impartial website run by the journalist Martin Lewis. The aim is to help people save money on all kinds of things from utility bills, gas, electricity, phone, water and so on to mortgages and other financial areas. A free email is sent each week to anyone who registers for it, so what are you waiting for?
