Year of publication: 2012

Background

This report provides an update on travel, shopping, money, technology, reading and television. It is based on the findings from interviews with 176 blind and partially sighted people. A range of questions were asked, particularly around the issues of independence, assistance and the ability to undertake certain activities.

Key findings

  • 60 per cent of respondents needed help to get out of the house
  • 75 per cent of respondents needed help to do their shopping
  • 45 per cent of respondents needed help to manage their money
  • All respondents aged 18-29 used a computer; compared to only 12 per cent of those aged over 75
  • 80 per cent of respondents said that they read books
  • 42 per cent of respondents said that they had watched a TV programme with Audio Description (AD)
  • The ability to undertake many activities was closely linked to age. This was particularly evident in the oldest age group.
