Sight is incredibly precious and we live in an increasingly visual world.

Levels of avoidable sight loss in the UK are unacceptably high. Fifty per cent of sight loss is avoidable.

Public health messages on the consequences of smoking, obesity, diabetes or high blood pressure rarely highlight that an outcome could be the loss of your sight.

Many individuals fail to understand that their lifestyle has a direct impact on their sight and they fail to take measures to protect and maintain their vision.

The barriers and enablers that affect access to primary and secondary eye care services across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland

In 2011, RNIB commissioned the independent research organisation Shared Intelligence to undertake research to identify the barriers and enables that affect access to primary and secondary eye care services across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. The research is part of RNIB's Community Engagement Projects, an initiative to pilot a range of evidence based eye health interventions to understand what models can help increase uptake of eye care services and treatment.

A review of evidence to evaluate effectiveness of intervention strategies to address inequalities in eye health care

In 2010, RNIB commissioned Mary Seacole Research Centre (MSRC) at De Montfort University to undertake a review of the evidence relating to the causes of inequalities in eye health, and interventions to reduce inequalities, with particular reference to ethnicity, age, and socio-economic deprivation. The focus was on preventive activity in relation to specified eye conditions

The Future Sight Loss UK 1 report focuses on the key topics of how many people are living with sight loss in the UK and what is the cost of sight loss to the UK economy. Published 2009

Tackling health inequalities

A report based on a workshop on health inequalities in the context of sight loss. The goals were to build a better understanding of health inequalities and identify innovative strategies and solutions to towards tackling these inequalities. Published 2009.

Future sight loss UK 2

Future Sight Loss UK 2 gives estimates on the prevalence of AMD, cataracts, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy in 2010 and 2020. It also gives estimates of health and social care costs. These estimates were used to inform the UK Vision Strategy. Published 2009.
