Background
This study collected information from Moon experts to understand who uses the Moon code, its strengths and weaknesses and what the future is for Moon.
Key findings
-
Moon is still being used and the resources which RNIB provides are valued by those working with Moon.
-
Moon's strengths include it is easy to learn, it is similar to the print alphabet so sighted people can join in and it is more inclusive than braille.
-
Moon's weaknesses include the lack of availability of Moon resources, it is slow to read and has a high cost for production.
-
Development of a simple way to produce Moon independently, similar to a Perkins brailler, was widely called for by respondents.
-
Views on whether Moon met people's needs were mixed, but despite acknowledging limitations most respondents had little enthusiasm for an alternative.
