Accessible Information Service

About Accessible Information

There are currently over 2 million people in the UK, 115, 000 in Wales with serious sight problems, many of whom cannot read standard size print. These individuals can be reached by producing information in accessible formats, such as Braille, large print, e-text and audio.

RNIB Cymru's bilingual accessible information team can enable you and your organisation to provide accessible information for all your staff and customers. We work with both public and private sector organisations - providing bespoke transcription services, whether for a frequent requirement, or a one-off document.

This service will help you meet the requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act, 1995.

We can do bilingual transcription into the following formats:

  • braille
  • large print
  • audio
  • e-text
  • tactile diagrams

What can be transcribed?

We produce a wide variety of documents in accessible formats such as:

  • information brochures, leaflets and flyers
  • annual reports
  • restaurant menus
  • utility bills
  • recruitment information packs
  • newsletters.

To discuss your requirements, please contact a member of the accessible information team.

For all formats, RNIB Cymru transcribes the original document into a master copy, and then produces the required number of copies for your organisation. The master copy is then retained for 18 months and any future copies can be supplied at your request.

How much does this cost?

The cost of transcription varies and is dependent on the length and complexity of the original document. Please call us to discuss your requirements. We can then provide you with a detailed quotation.

Why choose RNIB Cymru for your transcription needs?

Our highly qualified and experienced bilingual team will:

  • identify your needs, and provide a service tailored to these requirements
  • offer a cost-effective service and work with you on your timescales wherever possible
  • provide advice and guidance regarding services, allowing you to make informed decisions
  • ensure a professional and functional end product of the highest quality.

Training and consultancy

Training

Learn how to produce clear print and large print documents for your customers. Businesses spend £20 billion each year on communicating with their customers. Make sure that your message gets through!

We're now running a course to show you how to produce accessible information for your own organisation.

From print documents to braille, we're here to help you and your teams. If you're not sure whether you want to take the step to provide accessible formats yourself, or if you'd prefer us to do it for you, then we're happy to talk to you about the pros and cons to help you reach a decision. Often, a combined approach is best.

To discuss your organisation's requirements, or to find out more about planned courses, please contact a member of the accessible information team.

Consultancy

We also offer a consultancy service where we can give you help and advice on clear and large print, including choosing a suitable font (which to use and which to avoid), the importance of contrast, and the effective use of images and graphics in your publications.

This will enable you to communicate better with more of your customers; be able to distinguish effective yet attractive messages formats from ineffective ones; discover more accessible designs for a range of publications and learn who will benefit from clear and large print design.
