RNIB NIDigital Arts Summer School

During the week of 20-24 August, 18 blind or partially sighted children and adults seized the opportunity to take part in a Digital arts Summer School organised by RNIB Northern Ireland.

This event was held at the new Metropolitan Arts Centre (MAC) Belfast, and facilitated by four expert tutors in the fields of music, film production, website design and photography.

Time was also set aside for people to receive one to one training on equipment such as the Apple iPad and iMac computers.

Participants were made aware from the outset that no previous knowledge or experience was necessary; as RNIB NI's Campaigns Manager, Harry Reid put it, "All that's required is enthusiasm and a desire to learn new ways to express your feelings, thoughts and perspective on what is important to you."

All tuition, access to equipment, lunch and refreshments were provided free of charge and those participating made their own arrangements to travel to and from the venue on a daily basis.

A sighted guide service was available during the five days of activities.

This exciting event was the first of its kind targeting blind and partially sighted people in Northern Ireland and it is hoped that many more activities like this materialise in the future. Harry Reid added, "Not only do events such as these work to end the exclusion often experienced by blind and partially sighted people when it comes to the world of digital technology and media, but learning skills that enable people to participate as equals within today's society can help to boost self confidence and self esteem, - and its fun!"
