Benefits Helpline

Living with sight loss can mean that you have all sorts of extra expenses. It can also mean you now need access to services and organisations but are unsure of how to contact them.

The Welfare Rights service has two sections:

  • RNIB Scotland benefits helpline
  • Edinburgh and the Lothians income maximisation service

The RNIB Scotland Welfare Rights service can give you information and advice on:

  • claiming benefits
  • registering as blind or partially sighted
  • support groups and community associations in your local area
  • services for blind and partially sighted people in your local area
  • other organisations which can provide assistance

RNIB Scotland benefits helpline (sponsored by Standard Life)
The helpline number is 0845 602 4033.

It's available to blind and partially sighted people who live in Scotland.

Paul Barrowman, RNIB Scotland Welfare Rights officer, can give information and advice about services for blind and partially sighted people throughout Scotland as well as a benefit advice service, which includes checking you receive all the income you are entitled to and completing the necessary benefit claim forms.

Edinburgh and the Lothians income maximisation service
Colette Cummins, RNIB Scotland income maximisation officer, assists blind and partially sighted people who live in Edinburgh and the Lothians.

Colette checks to establish the benefits and concessions which a client should be receiving and assists the client through all stages of the process, including claim form completion, appeal application and representing at any appeals hearings.
