Press Release issued: 9 October 2010.
Former Prime Minister Gordon Brown will praise the work of carers at an event in Dunfermline on Saturday for families with children with a learning disability.
The Family Day at the Carnegie Conference Centre has been organised by the Royal National Institute of Blind People Scotland. At least one in three people with a learning disability also has a sight loss condition, emphasises the charity, but often this can go undiagnosed because the person can't communicate it.
Mr Brown will say: "The contribution that carers make to our community is immeasurable, and I want to thank carers across Britain. Day in, day out, carers support the most vulnerable in our community, including those with learning disabilities and significant sight loss.
"I welcome the opportunity to mark the dedication and commitment of the carers today."
John Legg, director of RNIB Scotland, said: "We're absolutely delighted that Gordon Brown has lent his support to this important message, both as a local MP and as a parent himself.
"People who live or work with someone with a learning disability may not know if they have a visual impairment and how it impacts on their daily life. Our free Family Day will tell them more. We've encouraged anyone who wants to find out more to come along.
"There'll be a chance to try relaxing activities, take part in fun activities, win prizes, chat to other parents and carers, and access a variety of information stalls. And there will be a buffet lunch.
"Expenses incurred by parents or unpaid carers in attending may be reimbursed. Support staff will be available to allow parents and carers to take part in therapies and activities if they wish.
"We held a very successful event last year which was very much enjoyed by all those who came along. So we are doing it again!"
The Family Day will take place between 10am and 3.30pm on Saturday.
