Barbara McLaughlan, Eye Health Campaign Manager from RNIB said:
"RNIB are currently investigating the problems being experienced in most eye clinics across England and Wales. These were most recently highlighted in the glaucoma guidelines issued by NICE in April 2009 but generally pre-date the guidelines. We believe that the long-standing capacity problems need to be addressed as a matter of great urgency. A recent report from the National Patient Safety Agency, stated that more than 100 patients have had unnecessary sight loss as the result of delays in follow-up appointments. Many more patients with glaucoma could needlessly lose their sight. We understand that eye clinics will need to provide an action plan to address the current problems and this should be in place by the end of this year."
