Outrage
RNIB is outraged that an expensive genetic home-testing kit, which checks for the risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), has launched in the UK, and warns against the use of DIY genetic home-testing kits.
Barbara McLaughlan, Campaigns Manager, Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB), said:
Taking risks
"People cannot afford to take risks when it comes to their eyesight. There is no substitute for regular eye tests and anyone experiencing problems with their sight should seek professional advice immediately.
"As well as genetic risks there are a number of other risk factors associated with AMD. These include ageing, smoking, obesity and poor diet. Although understanding of the genetics of AMD is improving, expensive DIY home-testing kits such as this are not enough and potentially endanger a person's sight by offering a false sense of security. Only professional advice from an optician will ensure early detection and treatment."
