Barbara McLaughlan, Policy and Campaigns Manager, RNIB said:
"RNIB is very concerned about reports that suggest cataract operations are an easy target for cuts.
Delaying cataract operations is a false economy. A patient whose sight is restricted by a cataract will at some stage absolutely need surgery.
Cataract surgery should continue to be performed when consultants believe it is in the patients' best interest.
PCTs who delay operations to benefit their end of year cashflow problems ultimately won't save money unless the patient dies before they receive the operation.
Delaying cataract operations could create further costs to the NHS due to an increased risk of patients having falls. Delays can also stop a patient from reading, driving or living an independent life.
With falls prevention a major priority for the Government's health policy, delaying cataract surgery would in the longer term increase NHS costs.
We will write to PCTs in England to encourage them not to undo the excellent progress that has been made since the cataract waiting time initiative was introduced in 2002."
