Ruth's story

Talking Books mean the world to Ruth

Imagine being ten years old and unable to see the world. This is Ruth's reality - she has retinitis pigmentosa. All she sees is a constant blur of colour.

Sometimes Ruth feels cut off from the world. She wishes she could read a book like her friends. But with our Talking Book service she can escape to an enchanted world just like other children.

However, only seven per cent of books published make it into formats that people with sight loss can access. You can help us change that.

'I love my Talking Books'

Everyone who uses the RNIB Talking Book service has an easy-to-use DAISY player to play their books on. These have been designed for blind and partially sighted people, making them easy to navigate.

"It was the best. I could enjoy stories just like my friends. I love listening to every sound. It's like I'm there in my head. I can't wait for the next one."

Growing up, we all had our favourite children's book characters. From the gangly Big Friendly Giant to the devious Captain Hook, courageous heroes and dastardly villains were a joy to us all.

For Ruth, every character is a comfort, a trusted companion to hold onto during the ups and downs of her daily life. That's why your support means the world to her and makes such a difference.

Make a donation

Please donate online and help more children with sight loss experience the pleasure of reading.

It costs RNIB £4 million a year to run the Talking Book service. And it can cost up to £2,500 to record a single Talking Book.

Our Talking Books bring so much joy to blind and partially sighted people. And a donation from you will keep this, and our other vital services, running.
