Norfolk councillors commute challenge

Local councillors in Norfolk wore sim specs (goggles that simulate sight loss) to accompany local campaigner Bernie Reddington on her bus journey to work.

Bernie challenged Derrick Murphy, leader of Norfolk County Council, and Graham Plant, Cabinet member for Planning and Transportation, to experience some of the challenges faced every day by blind and partially sighted commuters in Norfolk. Bernie, who works for Action for Blind People, wanted to highlight the detrimental impact the loss of the concessionary free travel before 9.30am and the free companion pass was having on this group of travellers.

Bernie said: "We managed to get across a clear message that sight impaired people have very specific travelling needs, but would just like to be treated as ordinary members of their communities. This means having access to educational, volunteering and employment opportunities. Loss of the early morning concessions makes doing this even more difficult."

RNIB want to gather evidence of how many people are affected by cuts to the concessionary and companion passes in Norfolk. If you have been affected please get in touch with regional campaigns officer, Emily Papaleo.
