Throughout March 2012, RNIB Regional Campaigns Officer, Claire Kay ran six training sessions for children. The sessions, which took place at the Harley Gallery in Worksop, focused on understanding sight loss and tactile art.
Claire explains, "the children were given a brief overview of visual awareness training in the morning. They all seemed to learn a lot and hopefully this will improve their awareness and understanding of sight loss in later life."
In the afternoon the children were provided with some art materials and asked to write their name in a tactile and accessible format. They had to consider the colour, contrast and clarity of the print and how tactile it was. Some of the children even managed to write their name in Braille. Claire was please with the results, "All of the children demonstrated that they had understood the different ways blind and partially sighted people can access text. They also all seemed to have a really good time".
