Campaigners in the London Borough of Merton have launched a campaign to protect adult social care packages.
A decision by the council to review all care packages, starting with the most expensive first, rang alarm bells for campaigners and groups. They are concerned that the decision is being driven by economic considerations, rather than on needs based criteria.
The local Centre for Independent Living, pan-disability groups and campaigners are now doing some investigating of their own. The council denies the review is driven by a need to save money and the Leader of the Conservative group (the Opposition in Merton) has asked the campaign group for further evidence as they are holding a review meeting of the budget one year on. Interestingly she said the Council is not short of money.
