Disabled people question candidates for London mayor

RNIB working with Mencap, Leonard Cheshire Disability and the MS Society organised a question time event, which the four main candidates for London Mayor attended.

The candidates were quizzed on a great variety of topics including improved access to buses, the reduction in accessible pedestrian crossings and the increase in disability related hate crimes. It was especially pleasing to see that volunteer campaigners were involved in some of the questioning and were able to provide direct experience of some of these problems.

The view from those who attended - around 120 people - was that each candidate did well on particular areas and it was especially pleasing that Brian Paddick, the Liberal Democrat's candidate, made mention of his visit to RNIB and some of the issues we discussed. It was also very encouraging that Jenny Jones, the Green Party's candidate and member of the London Assembly, visited a shared surface area after she praised the concept during the meeting.

Since the result and Boris's re-election we have prepared to focus on a whole list of areas which the Mayor said he would work on at the event - watch this space for more details soon.
