The Eye Pod comes to Sunderland

Volunteer campaigner Claire Parker with Leader Cllr Paul Watson and council Disability Champion Cllr Dave Allen

On 20 June, the RNIB Eye Pod started its journey around the country by visiting Sunderland, giving us the opportunity to talk to local decision makers about the importance of eye health.

Twenty councillors came to the Eye Pod, with those attending including the council Leader, his Cabinet colleagues, Mayor and Mayoress and Scrutiny Chair.

"This city greatly values the contribution that charities and the voluntary sector make to everyone's lives, and we were delighted to support the visit of RNIB's 'Pod' to the Civic Centre.

"It is important to raise awareness that every day 100 people start to lose their sight, yet 50 per cent of sight loss could be avoided. The 'Pod'' recreates some of the experiences of blindness for the visitors, and helps you realise just some of the problems people face due to visual impairment and the importance of recognising the early symptoms."
Leader of Sunderland City Council, Councillor Paul Watson
