Campaign against pavement obstructions in York

Local people with sight loss in York have noticed an increasing number of pavement obstructions across the city centre. These include:

  • Advertising boards ('A' Boards)
  • Café furniture
  • Wheelie bins
  • Parked cars

Pavement obstructions encroach on the clear space needed to provide safe passage for pedestrians. Blind and partially sighted (BPS) people already experience barriers to freedom of movement which limits their opportunities and choices.

Local people in York firmly believe that they should be able to move around safely and independently and fear if nothing is done; people with sight difficulties will start to lose their confidence to go out independently.
