Challenging pavement obstructions in Leeds

Tracy Dearing, Regional Campaigns Officer for Yorkshire and Humberside has been working with Charlotte Proctor, one of our Volunteer Campaign Coordinators in the region to tackle pavement obstructions in Leeds.

Leeds has been the target of intense campaigning by blind and partially sighted people trying to reclaim pavements for people. but instances of parking on pavements and of wheelie bins being left to obstruct streets are still regularly reported.

To strengthen local campaigning Charlotte and Tracy are gathering evidence to highlight to authorities just how prevalent this issue is and what impact it has on blind and partially sighted residents.

Charlotte is using her own area as a case study, whilst Tracy is helping Leeds Vision Consortium to record instances where wheelie bins obstruct walkways. It is hoped that by gathering and sharing this data, the recently launched 'Pavements for People' project will be expended across the whole of Leeds.
