Less impact in Doncaster

A small change has resulted in a big improvement for blind and partially sighted Doncaster residents, who couldn't believe that town planners had placed a litter bin directly in the way of a busy town centre pedestrian crossing.

RNIB Member, David Beasley's perseverance finally paid off when the Council agreed to re-site the bin, which was blocking access to the pedestrian crossing control box and rotating tactile cones. This small, common sense but hard-won change literally means less impact for Doncaster shoppers who had suffered unnecessary collisions with the badly placed bin.

Regional campaigns officer, Roy Ruddick urges local people to tackle unnecessary street clutter, like David did: "We know that badly placed street furniture, A-boards and pavement parking are creating hazardous environments for blind and partially sighted pedestrians. Local action is key to raising awareness and improving safety where councils, shops or individuals simply haven't thought through the consequences of their decisions.
