Employment

Job adverts being read with magnifier

Two thirds of working age blind and partially sighted people are not in work. Government employment support programmes are not reaching out and including people with sight loss, who are under represented on programmes like Pathways to Work. In addition, the government's own research has shown that 90 per cent of employers believe that it would be impossible or difficult to employ someone with sight loss, presenting huge barriers to finding work.

We are campaigning for;

  • Inclusive government employment programmes that fully support blind and partially sighted people in moving towards and into work
  • Increased levels of support for people in work who lose their sight, enabling them to retain their job
  • Increased publicity of the Access to Work scheme and awareness raising with employers about the support available to them when employing a member of staff with a disability.

Vocational rehabilitation

92 per cent of people who left work because of their disability or impairment felt that they could have stayed in their job had interventions been made. We're now calling on employers to be proactive in supporting employment retention and see that it makes sense not just for the individual but for the employers as well.
