Act now on UN Copyright Treaty

Please urge your country to support a clear, effective and binding WIPO treaty for blind people when the WIPO Copyright Committee meets on 16th July in Geneva. Tell them it is time for them to make blind people's "right to read" a reality!

Known opponents of our treaty proposal are the EU as a block, driven by France, Germany and Italy. Reluctant to say, and certainly anything but strong supporters, are the USA, Canada, Australia and Japan. These countries in particular are influential and need to hear from you that you want them to agree a treaty so that blind and partially sighted people can get many more accessible books to read.

Please use the WIPO website to contact your country WIPO representative.

You may use and adapt the following text:

Dear [name of contact at link for given country]

I am writing to you regarding the negotiations at the World Intellectual Property Organisation's (WIPO) copyright negotiating committee (known as "SCCR") on a possible treaty to allow blind and partially sighted people to get better access to books.

I was shocked to find that [name of country] is not fully supporting this treaty proposal. I urge you to pledge your support at WIPO SCCR this July for a clear, effective and binding treaty for blind and print disabled people.

Please take all the necessary steps to reach agreement at this July's meeting for such a treaty. It is time to end the "book famine" faced by millions of the world's blind and partially sighted people.

I await your reply on this important topic.

Sincerely,

[Your name]
