Getting around

One of the main problems blind and partially sighted people have is getting out and about safely and independently. This can be because there are obstacles in the street, or the street has not been designed well, or because there are problems using public or community transport. New ideas for designing streets - sometimes known as "shared streets" can also cause problems, as blind and partially sighted people have to negotiate their way down street shared by pedestrians and vehicles.

Blind and partially sighted people also experience problems when trying to shop independently - not just getting to the shops, but then getting the assistance they need to find the things they want and pay for them, and well as find out what the price is, what the alternatives are, and whether there are any bargains to be had.

RNIB's new campaigning strands are working to change this and make sure blind and partially sighted people can get out and about independent and safely, and shop for necessities as well as for "nice-to have's" with the same freedom as sighted people.
