Access to TV

A key prioirty for us was to ensure the switchover to Digital TV should not shut out blind and partially sighted people. We campaigned to ensure usability of all platforms at digital switchover in 2007-12 and significantly increase the usability and enjoyment of TV and AV materials.

Our campaign aimed to:

  • double audio description target on digital TV to 20 per cent
  • make being able to use and navigate digital TVs more accessible

Although we achieved our targets, we are continuing to monitor the broadcasters to make sure they live up to their 20 per cent commitments.

Success!

Government supports 20 per cent audio description

All the hard work by campaigners over the past decade to secure a 20 per cent target for audio description (AD) has paid off. The Minister for Broadcasting Ed Vaizey MP has announced his strong support for AD and the "iconic figure" of 20 per cent.
