Direct Payments

Payment of benefits and pensions by cheque

You may have heard, either through the grapevine or in a letter from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) that they will be phasing out cheque payments of benefits and pensions. This is true, but for people who have chosen to receive payments by cheque there will be an alternative method to cheque payments put in place.

What do these changes mean?

These changes do not mean that you have to move to payment through a Post Office Card Account or through a bank or building society account. It will be a while yet before the alternative to cheques is in place. We don't yet know exactly what it will be, but DWP have said that it must be accessible to blind and partially sighted people and must not rely on PIN numbers.

  • Don't feel that you have to change from cheque payments yet.
  • Don't feel that you have to move to payment through a Post Office Card Account or a bank account.
