Cataracts campaign

Cataract is a clouding of the lens in the eye which causes vision to appear washed out and misty. It can easily be treated with a replacement artificial lens in a 30 minute operation and is one of the most cost-effective surgical procedures carried out by the NHS.

In February 2012, we sent freedom of information requests to all Primary Care Trusts (PCTs) in England and found that just over half have arbitrary restrictions on surgery instead of operating when the condition affects the patient's quality of life.

We are calling for

We want:

  • PCTs and hospitals to follow the Department of Health "Action on Cataracts" guidance and the Royal College of Ophthalmologists' guidelines instead of using arbitrary restrictions on surgery.
  • those who deviate from the guidance to provide evidence to show how their decision is in the best interest of the patient. This applies to PCT/hospital treatment policies as well as individual cases.

Take action!

Help us campaign to end arbitrary restrictions on this sight saving treatment by telling us your story. If you or anyone you know has had problems getting cataract treatment, please share your story by emailing us at saveoursight@rnib.org.uk

Past campaign successes

In 2011, in conjunction with the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, we produced a report calling for Primary Care Trusts to stop turning back the clock on their cataract policies.
