To celebrate the amazing contribution Louis Braille made to blind people's lives we're asking schools to hold a Dotty Day. Would you like to make a small donation to wear dotty (polka dot) clothing, costumes or objects for a day? The money raised will help RNIB provide vital support for people who have lost their sight.
We've created fundraising materials and a braille learning pack for schools: with information about the history of Louis Braille, how braille works and how braille helps blind and partially sighted people.

Checklist for holding a Dotty Day

Choose a date (ideally after reading your learning pack).

Email us at fundraising@rnib.org.uk or give us a call on 0845 345 0054 (Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm) to let us know you are getting involved

Explain to pupils that you have been asked by RNIB to help support blind and partially sighted people by holding a Dotty Day

Tell pupils they can come to school wearing a dotty object or dotty clothing if they make a suggested donation of £2 (refer to the donation section below)

Print and fill in the Dotty Day poster and put on display

Hold your Dotty Day and collect donations (refer to donations and banking section)

Print the certificates (included in the pack). These are for everyone who takes part.

Encourage pupils to use the braille they have learnt

Explain prizes will be awarded for originality and effort

Dotty Days can be used to deliver other elements of the curriculum such as art and design

Fill in the template letter to parents included in the pack with details of your school's Dotty Day and send to parents

Donations and banking
We hope the suggested donation of £2 is an affordable amount for participating in a Dotty Day.
However, individual schools should consider whether this is an appropriate amount for their pupils and are entitled to change the donation amount in any promotional materials or letters. No child should be left out due to inability to pay; the letter to parents makes this clear.
