Gift Aid income is crucial to charities; it is worth almost £1 billion. Currently, charities are missing out on additional Gift Aid from higher rate taxpayers. RNIB, along with the Institute of Fundraising (IoF) and other leading charities, is lobbying the government to make changes to Gift Aid legislation.

How Gift Aid is important to RNIB
RNIB's Gift Aid income for 2008/2009 was almost £1.7million, around 3 percent of our total voluntary income, raised at no extra cost to our supporters.
If the IoF's proposals are accepted, charities could reclaim the full amount of tax paid by higher rate donors by 2010.

Right now, a donation of £1000 would yield £280 in Gift Aid.
-
The proposal would see a donation of £1000 yield £666 in Gift Aid.
How to Gift Aid your donation
If you are a higher rate tax payer, the current Gift Aid procedure for donations is time-consuming. This means that very few people claim back the additional tax relief on their donations. Our Gift Aid your donation FAQs page has lots of advice on how to do this.
The Institute of Fundraising's proposal wants to simplify the higher rate Gift Aid process for the future to benefit RNIB and other UK charities.
