Muriel Letman was a teacher (now retired) and after teaching so many children to read, she was really moved by the radio adverts for Talking Books last year and decided to publish a book of her poems.
The book entitled Poems for Parents is now available for purchase on Amazon.
About the book
Author dedication by Muriel Letman:
"In an RNIB appeal on Classic FM radio, a finely-spoken young boy explained that he could not follow The Pied Piper into the mountain or Charlie to the Chocolate Factory because he could not read the stories...He was blind.
After a lifetime as a primary teacher, helping hundreds of children to read, this statement touched me deeply. How to raise funds for Braille books? My scattered thoughts and scribbled rhymes, organised by my family and illustrated by my grandchildren were marshalled into service.
Poems for Parents serves to raise money for RNIB and the wonderful work they do. It is a delightful collection of poems musing on the pleasures and problems of being a parent, and indeed a grandparent for that matter. This is a must read for anyone who has ever battled with a baby at bathtime, fought to feed a stubborn toddler and ultimately watched their little ones grow to be parents themselves."
Two Soon
An extract from the poem 'Two Soon' by Muriel Letman.
Candles, crisps, small sausages,
a party now you're two.
Several cars, three dumper trucks,
so much given by so few.
Progressed from fettered cot
to the freedom of a bed.
The changes are so rapid,
just how two years have sped.
All those unworn bootees,
and baby-grows, size one,
now ready to be packed away
outgrown by our son.
It seems such a shame to waste them,
so we look forward to next June.
As if we have not suffered enough,
it has been confirmed - two soon!
