Helping our work live on

Mr Cecil William Green, known to his friends as Bill, started volunteering with RNIB in 1984. From the age of 63 until he was 90 he worked as one of our volunteer braillists.

Timothy Jarrold, who previously worked with volunteers remembers Bill;

"Some of my earliest memories concern Bill's ChiWriter Manual. His clear instructions and patient support helped many to start using a computer. I know he travelled all over the country introducing the software. He also transcribed a wide variety of material for our customers - 'The Bible in Mockney', cookery books, and high level academic texts - I don't think there was anything Bill wouldn't tackle! We are so grateful for all he did as an RNIB volunteer."

Bill was a great believer in the work of RNIB, as well as volunteering he gave in other ways too. When he and his wife Evelyn celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary in 2007 they kindly asked friends and family to make a donation instead of spending money on presents. He proudly sent the collection in saying "We enclose a cheque for RNIB charity knowing that it will be put to good use."

Bill's legacy

Sadly Bill passed away last year. Bill's contribution to RNIB, over 27 years of continuous service, was of huge value to Braille readers and the work Bill did was really important to him.

We recently received a lovely letter from his daughter Linda, with a Legacy of £5000 from Bill's Will. She was pleased to be able to carry out her father's wishes to continue supporting the cause he had championed in his lifetime.

A third of RNIB's work is only possible thanks to the generosity of supporters like Bill remembering us in their Will.
