Mini disc replacement... Help please

My 85 year old father in law likes to record radio programs using a mini disc recorder and a timer switch. The mini disc is beginning to malfunction and causing everyone a lot of stress.
What other ways could a totally blind person record radio programs at preset times?
Help much appreciated. Thank you.

What a good idea, using the TV to record a radio programme! He could do this with the TVonics box, which works on Freeview, which carries lots (but not all) radio stations. With a TV connected you have a nice big display, and he needs a talking system then recordings can be set up and recorded because the box talks. Choosing the radio programmes to record is done in the electronic programme guide.

The voice is very clear and easy to understand. The buttons on the remote control are quite small and there are quite a few of them.

There are some videos of the box working on YouTube, and the box is available in the RNIB online shop.

Hi Nicky,
You might like to look at the Bones Milestone 312. I'm not sure if your 85 year old father-in-law will be able to use digital, rather than moving disks but this will do just fine. You will need a Bones Milestone 312 with the added AGENDA application. This will give you a fully functioning FM radio and a diary, which can record radio programmes. The device is made especially for blind people and has audio output. If you look in the RNIB shop under handheld DAISY players and you will find it there. Not difficult to use but for an 85 year old, I don't know. If I knew you then you could try mine, I have 3.

Kind regards,

Steve.

Hi Nicky,

I'm not sure of anything specific, but it is worth getting in touch with The British Wireless for the Blind http://www.blind.org.uk/. Working on that basis that you dad does not need the portability that Mini Disc offers, it may well be possible to find a Radio with built in recording capabilities. Worth having a chat with these guys as they do supply radios and may have something up their sleeves that can help.

Good Luck!
Paul

Hi Nicky

Assuming you have a satellite dish, have you considered a Freesat+ receiver? With these you can record tv and radio, and some have the facility to record a series of programs.

Hope this helps!
