Hi,
I assume by "Speech" you mean the built-in screen reading software that tells you what is on the screen as opposed to controlling the phone by voice commands.
I took the plunge in November 2012 and got myself an iPhone, i work on the basis that these kind of smart phones and touch devices are going to completely replace keypad phones, so best i get to grips with them. There is quite a lot to say, but i'll try and keep it brief.
I am still getting used to the iPhone, there is sooo much it can do other than just be a phone. The built in screen reader is excellent and makes navigating the device easy.
If you only want a mobile phone, then it may not be the best device, for instance, trying to navigate those phone menus where you press 1 to speak to someone who cares etc is pretty much impossible. However, you can just press a key and say "Call Wife" and as long as "Wife" is in your list of contacts it starts calling!
Similarly, once you get used to it, you can simply dictate a text message and send it! This is great as i always used to avoid text messages with friends due to it being painstakingly slow to type them. Now, i just dictate them!
It'll probably help if you are able to use a computer as this is how i manage and add my contacts, otherwise it would've been quite a time consuming task.
I have found that the RNIB Hi-Tech Team have been particularly helpful when i have needed some input from them. You will definately need sighted assistance to get the phone setup.
If you can, try and get yourself to an RNIB workshop to checkout the options and if you can't purchase online as i think you get 14 days to road test the phone and you can then return it without charge.
For what it's worth, i love the ipPhone, it's not perfect and everyone is different.
Good luck
Paul
