RNIB Talking Books on the iPhone

Hello, I am hoping that someone can help me here. I currently subscribe to Audible and listen to my audio books on my iPhone. It's nice and easy as iTunes manages the books rather well.

Due to the costs of Audible, i am considering moving to the RNIB talking books service, but it's really unclear as to whether or not i can listen to the books on my iPhone and whether or not i can easily manage them in iTunes.

Has anyone got any experience of listening to RNIB Talking Books on a portable Apple device such as iPod or iPhone?

If so, can you offer any advice as to Apps required, management of books in iTunes etc?

Thanks in advance.

Paul

Thank you both for your thoughts. Some things for me to investigate, but at least it looks like where there is a will there is a way!

Best,
Paul

Hi Guys,
Yes, you can use I Tunes to play rnib mp3 audio books, although I don't know how I Tunes copes with DAISY. Just like any music audio file. You will need to cut and paste the audio book into I Tunes audio or book folder and I guess it will be formatted an I Tunes format. As far as streaming and other book providers for I devices, rnib also has a streaming service called Book Stream but you will need to use a computer for this (I've been campaigning for a long time for rnib to create an I device access app for Book Stream but they say they can't afford to do it and the current Book Stream player is annoying because if you use a screen reader, the screen reader talks over the audio book, so you have to turn it off). The cost is £50 a year. Also, look at Listening Books(www.listening-books.org, I think), you can download audio books to your I device with this service. Charges start at £20 a year for their download service.

Hello Paul, I posted a message a while ago asking if there was a way of accessing RNIB Talking books via ipad. There were no responses, and I have concluded that it is not possible, at least at the moment.

However I have found http://www.calibre.org.uk/. They have recently started streaming audio books, a quote from their website: "Streaming is a service where Calibre audio books are delivered to you live as you listen, using the internet (as opposed to downloads where the complete book is delivered before you start listening). Calibre members can listen to them on internet enabled devices which include computers and of course smart mobile phones."

I have now subscribed to them (via a single, one off payment of 35 pounds), and am able to listen to the books on my ipad, as well as on a PC, etc.
