Sonus-1 XT, a digital radio by Pure, features voice feedback technology which means it delivers audible menus - names of the stations, the settings including current time, even alarm settings. The names of stations are spoken or even spelt out as you tune the set.
Sadly, this device is no longer available from Pure, the manufacturer, as it has been discontinued. Nevertheless, we have reviewed it as we have been advised by many that it is the best radio for blind and partially sighted people since it supports audible menus.
A review of the Sonus- 1 XT by a user with sight loss can be found on our website at http://www.rnib.org.uk/livingwithsightloss/tvradiofilm/productreviews/Pages/review_pure_sonus.aspx

I got 1 of these radios at the beginning of 2006. I love it, but the problem is that a lot of the stations have changed and the radio have the wrong names now. I never updated the software, as I was told by a friend who tried that it was very difficult. You needed to know the serial number, which I don't and I never heard of anyone managing to update. I'd also love to see a new radio with talking software.

Dear all,
I managed to get this digital radio last May (I purchased it as an almost new) from a blind society in Essex. I must say it is brilliant. Everything is accessible as suggested in the description above and from the blind user who replyed. Wonderful male voice (which can be changed to female by loading software from the Pure web site and everything is adjustable easily (including the alarm and clock). It's a shame that Pure have discontinued the radio because I believe they have missed something. Perhaps a look on E Bay might be in order for those who what one or the rnib should contact Pure so that they add speech and accessibility to one of the newer models!
Regards,
Steve.

Hi
I have a pure sonus x1 and find it exelant.
the speech is invaluable as I am totally blind, and using the x1 I feel in control of the radio.
I have another digital radio but when I tune that one in to a particular station it is cumbersome and I generally have to find the station on the pure first and match the sound on the other radio.
so it is a sad demise that tis feature has not appeard on another pure unit.
regards.
